Resolution of the BChD Congress

IN SUPPORT OF UKRAINE, FOR A JUST PEACE AND AN INDEPENDENT BELARUS!

The Congress of Belarusian Christian Democracy, guided by Christian values, the principles of freedom and human dignity, respect for international law and the right of every nation to self-determination,

- condemns Russian aggression against Ukraine, which constitutes a gross violation of sovereignty, territorial integrity and the Ukrainian people’s right to determine their future independently;

- expresses solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who are fighting for freedom, independence and the right to live in a peaceful, sovereign state;

- emphasises that a lasting peace is impossible without respect for international law, the restoration of justice and security guarantees for Ukraine. Peace must not mean rewarding the aggressor, legitimising the seizure of another country’s territories or coercing Ukraine into relinquishing its sovereignty;

- condemns the participation of Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s regime in Russian aggression, including making Belarusian territory available for military operations against Ukraine and providing other support to the Russian war machine. Such a policy runs counter to Belarus’s national interests, threatens its independence and puts the Belarusian people at risk of being drawn into someone else’s war;

- rejects the principle of collective responsibility of the Belarusian people for the actions of the authoritarian regime. The Belarusian people have the right to freedom, democratic choice and an independent state that builds relations with its neighbours on the basis of good neighbourliness, respect and peace;

- considers that responsibility for international crimes must be determined on the basis of evidence, through independent and fair judicial proceedings, and that those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with international law.

Therefore, the Congress of Belarusian Christian Democracy:

1. Demands that the Russian Federation immediately cease its aggression against Ukraine, withdraw its troops from Ukraine’s internationally recognised territory and comply with the norms of international law.

2. Supports Ukraine’s right to self-defence, to the restoration of its territorial integrity and to determine its own future independently, without external coercion.

3. Calls for those responsible for war crimes and other international crimes to be held accountable internationally, and for proper investigation of unlawful deportation, torture, attacks on civilians and other serious violations of international humanitarian law.

4. Demands an end to the use of Belarusian territory for aggression against Ukraine and the immediate cessation of any form of military support for Russian aggression by the Belarusian authorities.

5. Calls on the international community to support Belarus’s independence, Belarusian democratic forces and civil society — and to prevent the Belarusian people from being equated with the authoritarian regime.

6. Appeals to Christian churches, democratic parties and civil society organisations for solidarity with the victims of war, assistance to Ukrainian refugees and support for initiatives aimed at a just and lasting peace.

7. Asks the Government of Ukraine to provide comprehensive assistance to Belarusian volunteers participating in the defence of Ukraine, as well as to refugees from Belarus — because a democratic and independent Belarus is one of the most important factors in Ukraine’s security.

Belarusian Christian Democracy is convinced that true peace is based not on fear and subordination, but on truth, justice, respect for human dignity and the freedom of nations.

A free Ukraine is an important condition for Belarus’s security and free future. An independent, democratic Belarus must be a reliable partner in peace and European security, rather than a source of threats to its neighbours.
